World Book Day celebrated across the Trust

Children across the Harmony Trust celebrated World Book Day with a week of events designed to foster and promote a lifelong love of reading.  Activities included:

  • Wake up with a story – an opportunity for children to share their books with their parents as they came into school.
  • Visits from external providers including ‘The Pop Project’ and ‘Bringing Books to Life’
  • The Vocabulary Parade
  • Character Dress Up Day
  • Teacher / Class Book Swap

World Book Day is a registered charity on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own. It’s also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. This is the 22nd year there’s been a World Book Day, children of all ages from all around the globe came together to appreciate reading.

The celebration of World Book Day is one of the many ongoing events included in the ‘Read, Achieve, Succeed’ initiative which runs across both the Oldham and Derby Academies.

‘Read, Achieve, Succeed’ was launched in September 2016 as a commitment to develop Reading for Pleasure and to ensure that all our children have a book of their own for each year that they attend a Harmony Trust academy.

Research by The National Literacy Trust has found that children who own their own books are more likely to achieve higher educational outcomes than those who do not.

They also found that children who read and enjoy reading are three times more likely to have higher levels of mental well-being than those who do not.
